1979 | The Ranking List is initiated. Skiers are ranked
based on their single best performance in each event. Overall is calculated using their best performance in each event from any tournament. The list is named The World Standings List. The basis of the list is an existing EAME list that is expanded to be world-wide. The list is calculated using a new technology, the Apple II personal computer. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft and Taperflex Skis |
1980 | The ranking list is continued on the same basis as 1979. Country Team standings are also calculated. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft and Taperflex Skis |
1981 | The list continues unchanged. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1982 | The list is calculated in the same way but the minimum

1983 | The list continues on the same basis as 1982. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1984 | This year marks the appearance of the World Ranking List.
Two lists are published, the Standings List based on the single
best performance and the Ranking List based on the average of
the two best performances in two separate tournaments. For
the Ranking List, only the top 100 men and top 40 women are
listed. The list is distributed in a small format pamphlet. The World "All Star" feature is dropped. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1985 | The list is continued the same as 1984 with Rankings
and Standings being calculated. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1986 | The lists are calculated on the same basis. The
official IOC country codes are now used. In the Standings
List, the tournament where the performance was made is now
identified. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1987 | The lists continue on the same basis. It is distributed
in the small pamphlet format. The 1987 list is dedicated to Ivan Cantacuzene who passed away in this year. For the first time, skiers are allowed to qualify for the World Championships by list placement in addition to the normal team selection. This allows the top specialists to be included in the World Championships thus opening it up to all skiers and reflecting the trend toward event specialization. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1988 | The lists continue on the same basis. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1989 | The lists continue on the same basis. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1990 | The lists continue on the same basis. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1991 | The lists continue on the same basis. The country "team" feature is discontinued. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1992 | The lists continue. A new "Junior Division" list is added. The ranking list is expanded to include the top 60 women listings. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1993 | In a major change, only rankings are printed, but
for all qualifying skiers rather than a limited number. A short list of the World's best performances is included. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1994 | This year the list is published twice, once in May and
again in October. Only the October edition is formally
distributed in full. Ranking List entries are now allowed for the IWSF Junior World Championships. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1995 | This year marks a major shift. The list is now
published on the internet. This is a very advanced
approach for the time. The IWSF establishes
www.iwsf.com and this is one of the features. In 1995, three lists are published. A new one for August is included. This was found to be too cumbersome as it was in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere season and was only done in 1995. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1996 | Two lists a year are now published on the internet.
With this new communication vehicle, a more formal system
is put in place where there is a specific correction
period before the lists are formalized. All ranking
data is made available on the internet on www.iwsf.com. In an additional related event, the IWSF holds it first World Cup series and a World Cup list is established. Only jump is held in 1996. The list is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1997 | Two lists per year is continued as it is up to the
current year (2003). The World Cup now includes slalom and jump and the World Cup list is used for top skiers to satisfy the requirement of a more current list that is also based on placement rather than only performance. The World Cup is sponsored by Cafe de Colombia The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1998 | The listing process continues as it did in 1997
with the two major lists. The World Cup is sponsored by Cafe de Colombia The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
1999 | The listing process continues as it did in 1998
with the two major lists. Direct skier entry into the World Championships is now also allowed from the World Cup list A new event, Men's Ski Flying is introduced and a list is created. The basis of the Ski Flying list is the single best performance since there are only a few professional tournaments. The World Cup is sponsored by Cafe de Colombia The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
2000 | The listing process continues as it did in 1999
with the two major lists. Women Ski Flying is added. The World Cup is sponsored by Cafe de Colombia The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
2001 | The World Cup loses its sponsorship and is discontinued so
no World Cup list is produced. A special ranking
mechanism is created to substitute for this list
for skiers who were qualifying for the World Championships
from the World Cup List. A new system is used to break ties since many skiers, especially in slalom, have the same scores. The ties are broken by considering the top 5 scores. The skier with the higer score in his top 5 list gets the higher position. The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
2002 | An Elite Ranking List is created to provide the same
placement basis list as the World Cup. The Elite List
covers Slalom, Tricks, and Jump and is developed with
the athletes. The standard Ranking list continues. No events qualify for the Men's Ski Flying list The Elite Ranking List is not commercially sponsored The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
2003 | A special web site is created for the Elite Ranking List
in a major promotion. (www.iwsfranking.com)
Skiers pictures and profiles as well
as ranking history are displayed. It is intended to
have all historical ranking information on this site as well. The standard Ranking list continues. A special list for the U21 World Championships will be extracted from the Ranking List for list qualifications similar to the junior Ranking List World Championship qualifications. The Elite Ranking List is not commercially sponsored The Ranking List is sponsored by Correct Craft |
